Herpes Solution
Herpes is a common, recurrent infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), of which there are two subtypes: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both can cause blisters and ulcers on the mouth, face, genitals, or around the anus. Once a person is infected with herpes, he or she remains infected for life. However, the virus often remains dormant and outbreaks frequencies vary for each person based on immunity strength, stress level and other factors.
The symptoms of herpes are usually itching and burning at the outbreak site and then eventually cause clusters of blisters. The blisters break, leaving tender ulcers (sores) that may take two to four weeks to heal the first time they occur. Typically, another outbreak can appear weeks or months after the first. The fluid from these sores are highly contagious and can infect other parts of the body if contact is made, including blindness if it gets into the eyes.
According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control approximately 45 million people ages 12 and older, or one out of five adolescents and adults, currently have or have had genital HSV infection. Between the late 1970s and the early 1990s, the number of Americans with genital herpes infection increased 30 percent and continues to grow.
Genital HSV-2 infection is more common in women (approximately one out of four women) than in men (almost one out of five). This may be due to male-to-female transmissions being more likely than female-to-male transmission.
